ashton bancroft - graphic designer
hiMy name is Ashton Bancroft. In May of 2009 I graduated from Millersville University, where I earned a BA in Art with a graphic design option. I have been involved with the design industry for about four years in various different fields. My primary focus has been on print design, but I know my way around the web. I have a passion for design that leaks into every aspect of my life, from analyzing a menu for its underlying grid structure to lecturing my friends on the evils of Comic Sans.

I am a graphic designer. I am also a photographer, an amateur geologist, and a root beer connoisseur. I am a hockey fanatic, a Rubik’s cube solver, a typophile, a murder mystery reader, a paper enthusiast, a pack rat, a gardener, and a beginning guitarist. It is my belief that as a graphic designer, it is essential to be interested in and passionate about as many things as possible. One day I could be designing packaging for bath products, while the next I'll be creating an identity system for a high school’s Physics Olympics. I am interested in anything and everything because anything and everything contains potential for design.

Bruce Mau:
Incomplete Manifesto
Student Project

When asked to create a book based on a contemporary designer, I chose Bruce Mau as I had seen his work with the Seattle Public Library and wanted to know more about the designer behind such bold typography. This book illustrates the 43 points in Bruce Mau's Incomplete Manifesto using examples of his work along with other imagery.

The Bath House Ltd.
Sustainable Packaging Line
Student Project

These Bath House packages were created with emphasis on sustainable packaging. All containers in the line are completely recyclable and made from sustainable materials. All materials and glues used in the line are acquired from manufacturers using sustainable methods of production. In addition, the products themselves are all organic.

2009 Physics Olympics
Welcome Packet, Rulebook
Student Project

This packet was designed around the concept of overlapping light. Design elements and heading typography was created using a process that mimics overlapping color theory, using RGB on three different typefaces. The welcome packet folder includes the competition rulebook, team itineraries, a map of campus, parking permits, name tags, and meal tickets. A T-Shirt and Banner were also created for the competition.

R.O.S.S.
Poster Campaign
Client Project

These posters were a series to promote the ROSS classes being offered by the Martial Arts Club. ROSS is a system of martial arts taught to the Russian special forces and Millersville University is one of the few places in North America that teaches the system. These posters needed to have a bold impact to stand out against the myriad of posters that adorn campus bulliten boards, so for inspiration I researched the styles of old Soviet propaganda posters.

Straub Brewery
Giftshop T-Shirts
Client Project

While working at XtremeWear Screenprinting and Embroidery, the owners of Straub Brewery in St. Marys wanted to create a new line of shirts to sell at their brewery gift shop that would appeal to twentysomethings. Two designs were chosen from the initial concepts for a trial run. These shirts went over extremely well with the client, and they ordered more for their giftshop at a later date.

Русские Сказки
Russian Fairy Tale Restaurant
Student Project

In creating a concept and menu for a fictional ethnic restaurant, I turned to my love of Russian culture and came up with a restaurant based on Russian Fairy Tales, or Русские Сказки. This menu was created as a giveaway to children when they came to the restaurant. Each menu category is accompanied by a related Russian Fairy Tale. In keeping with the nature of the giveaway menu, the entire booklet is printed on newsprint. This simultaneously reduces cost and gives a vintage feel to the menu.

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi
Illustration
Student Project

These Illustrations were created for "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi," a tale from Rudyard Kipling's second Jungle Book. They were created in Painter X, emulating a scratchboard style.

Whiskers
Publication Design
Student Project

Whiskers is a magazine created for cat lovers who also appreciate good design. Most cat magazines out there are poorly designed and filled with all the usual cliches. Whiskers is targeted at a twenty-something crowd, utilizing elements such as bold colors and clean, modern design.

Alternative Typography using
Non-Traditional Methods
Student and Client Project

Non-traditional typography is used in everything from movie posters to album covers. By expanding beyond the everyday definition of an alphabet, the forms of each letter turn into their own abstract forms of design. These are a few alternative alphabets that were created with non-traditional methods.
